For this Each One Teach One activity, I visited HOOK, a wings restaurant in Tampere, together with Miro and two other Korean exchange students. The purpose of this meeting was to experience Finnish food culture while engaging in cultural and language exchange.
We ordered chicken wings with four different sauces, along with French fries and vegetables. One interesting aspect of Finnish-style wings was that the wings were fully mixed with sauce before serving, unlike in Korea where sauces are often served separately. The taste was more sour and tangy than Korean wings. At first, I did not like it, but as I kept eating, I gradually found the flavor enjoyable.
During the meal, we talked about Miro’s exchange student application to Korea and discussed the major cultural differences between Korea and Finland. We also shared our favorite music through a year-end playlist recap, which helped us learn more about each other’s tastes.
For the language exchange, I taught Miro several Korean words related to food and music, and we practiced simple Korean conversations together.
Overall, this experience showed how food can support cultural understanding and language learning in a natural and engaging way.
