It snowed a lot last days, so we decided to make a Winter Snow Walk together in Tampere city! We did a beautiful walk. The temperature was nice to do a little walk, we had warm clothes on. During our walk we talked about the different celebrations we have. We started with Sinterklaas, because in the Netherlands Sinterklaas arrived last week.
We explained them the celebration for children and we figured out that they have something similar in Germany. I didn’t know this, but they call it Nikolaus. Also in Germany children place a shoe on their doorstep and St. Nicholas brings the children a present overnight. They have the final celebration on the 6th of December, where we celebrate it on the 5th.
Next to that we learnt Christmas celebrations are kind of the same as in the Netherlands. Some families do it different, but mostly on Christmas Eve (24th of December) presents are placed under the Christmas tree. In Germany they celebrate Christmas on the 25th and 26th of December with their family. This is the same in the Netherlands.
I looked back on my learnings this semester from Each One Teach One. I learnt a lot about the German culture, I didn’t know most of the things. It is funny to discover most of the words kind of look like each other in German and Dutch. This course brought me a lot of value in discovering the German culture, I learnt a lot!
