Today Rajdeep and I had our first language exchange meeting. We met at a café in Tampere to get to know each other’s learning goals and make a plan for the coming weeks. I started by helping him with basic Spanish greetings and polite phrases like “Buenos días,” “¿Cómo estás?” and “Mucho gusto.” He helped me with similar expressions in Finnish, such as “Hyvää päivää” and “Hauska tutustua.” I learned how to pronounce Finnish greetings more naturally and started to feel less afraid of speaking.
This session reminded me how motivating it is to learn in a real context. Unlike classroom lessons, this felt more personal and relaxed. I could ask spontaneous questions, and Rajdeep also shared cultural details about how Finns usually greet people, which I didn’t expect but really appreciated.
One challenge for me was pronunciation. Finnish vowels are very precise, and I struggled with “y” and “ä” sounds. Also, I noticed that when Rajdeep spoke quickly, I understood almost nothing. That was a bit frustrating but also motivating.
We followed our original plan quite well today. The only small change was that we spent more time discussing culture than expected, but that made the conversation more engaging and meaningful.
