Today we met at my place and decided to cook Spanish tapas while practising both languages. This created a very natural environment to use everyday expressions. While preparing the food, Rajdeep learned words like aceite, pan, and ajo, and I practised Finnish equivalents like öljy (oil), leipä (bread), and valkosipuli (garlic). We also practised instructions such as “Pass me the salt” or “Cut the bread,” which was useful in both languages.
I noticed that being busy with a practical activity made the learning feel more spontaneous. I wasn’t overthinking grammar, and I spoke more freely than in the library. Rajdeep corrected my Finnish gently when I made small mistakes, which helped me remember expressions better.
A new thing I realised today is how strong the connection between language and culture can be. While cooking, we talked about traditional dishes from Spain and Finland, and I learned some new Finnish words related to food that weren’t originally in our plan.
One difficulty was multitasking: speaking in Finnish while focusing on cooking sometimes made me switch back to Spanish or English unconsciously. Still, I think this type of session really boosted my confidence. We followed the plan but in a more flexible and fun way.
