[Finnish/German] 4th meeting: Finnish dinner

For our fourth meeting, Reetta invited me to her new apartment to which she had just moved into with her boyfriend.

Upon arrival, she introduced me to her boyfriend and showed me around the beautiful flat which also has its own sauna in the bathroom. Afterwards we talked about my week in Germany where I celebrated carnival and I showed her some pictures from the parade where we dressed up with friends and family.

Then we had a lovely dinner with several local and national delicacies such as salmon, herring, trout, mustamakkara (blood sausage) with lingonberry jam and saaristolaisleipä (dark bread) with butter. For dessert, Reetta prepared Karjalan piirakka (Karelian pastry) with butter and egg as well as leipäjuusto (bread cheese) with cloudberry jam. It was a great opportunity for me to get to know Finnish food preferences and I really enjoyed the dishes.

Even though I knew that blood sausage was a local dish in the Tampere area, I never tried it before and I was surprised by how different it was from our local blood sausage in the Rhineland region of Germany. There, we use fillers in the sausage such as barley besides the pure blood. In addition, we serve it differently as we eat it with mashed potatoes and apple sauce instead of cloudberry jam. Nevertheless, I enjoy the Finnish variation as well.

Until next time, Michelle
