Our first meeting was in a form of a coffee date. Our group of five eager learners met at the Fazer café in the city centrum. It was interesting to see who was a coffee and who a tea drinker.
After teaching others how to order at a café in Finnish, it was time for me to learn the same in German. I wanted to learn this kind of vocabulary and expressions especially from a customer service point of view. Some of the words and phrases I learned:
der Beleg/der (Kassen)Bon = a receit
auf Lager = in Stock
Haben Sie noch das auf Lager? = Do you still have it in stock?
Das macht dann…/Das wären dann… = It would cost…
Noch was dazu? = Anything else with this?
Möchten Sie eine Tasche/Tüte dazu haben? = Do you need a bag?
Trinkgeld = tip
Kaffeekasse = tip jar
I also learned a few things about German coffee culture: you need to tip around 10 % and sometimes there is also a tip jar at the cashier. Apparently, you also order and drink the coffee first, and then you receive the bill to your table.
