Learning Spanish Vocabulary (Meeting 5)

Venue: Zoom Meeting
Date: 8th April

Today, we decided to study some of the most often used Spanish vocabulary. Enric was on a ferry on his way back to Finland so I asked him to teach me some vocabulary in relation to what was around him. I thought that would be easier since coming up with just random things seemed too difficult. Thus, we thought that it was more interesting to know some of the basic things that we see or use in our daily lives for example: the couch, table, chair, the ferry, friends, travel, pub, etc.

I had a hard time pronouncing most of them and for someone like me who is also very fond of learning accents, i really wanted to excel the pronunciation of those words. Enric keeps teasing me that I have become half Spanish which is obviously not true. There is so much dynamic for this language and it is also one of the most widely spoken language in the world which is why I think it is pretty handy to learn a bit of it.

In my overall experience, I noticed that the grammar and pronunciation vary from that of English, they are simpler and more reliable. Since Latin is nearly 30% of English vocabulary, it is easier to recognise and understand several Spanish words with similar roots right away. Also that you can communicate a lot with basic grammar, so you’ll be able to communicate and express yourself well before you achieve a high level of comprehension.

Next week, we decided to meet and learn about the culture and heritage as well as engage in some activities together.
