Making Munkkis!!

On 12.1016 was my 3rd meeting with Eveliina. Therefore we met again in her apartment to make munkkis!! Eveliina got the receipt from her mother and also had no experience in making them herself, so we were a bit clueless in the beginning. However, after a phone call with her mother everything was clear and we could start.

Here is the receipt:

3dl                            water (warm)

2dl                            milk (warm)

1 package              yield

1dl                            sugar

1ts                            salt

100g                        butter (soft)

13dl                         flour

At first we mixed all the ingredients. Then we put the dough into the microwave until it expanded enough due to the yield, which took about 50 minutes. Meanwhile Eveliina showed me the Moomin series which is really cute.

Then it was time to make small round portions out of the dough. We placed them on baking trays and covered them with kitchen towels that they can expand even more. After another 50 minutes it was finally time to heat up 1l oil, form munkkis out of the portions and let them fry. We were so excited when we did that for the first time because we weren’t sure if it will work, but everything went fine and we got 22 munkkis. J

And they were soooo good. They tasted even better than the ones from the Pynikki café, so we couldn’t stop ourselves and ate as much as we could.

The only mistake we made was forgetting to turn on the exhaust hood. This led to the result that our eyes stung so much that it looked like we were crying. However after opening the windows for a while and our eyes felt better.

Later we looked up some Finnish and German tongue twisters. That was really funny, because it is so hard to pronounce everything right. One of them was:

Koko kokko kokoo koko kokkoa koko kokolla

That led to a discussion about pronunciation rules and all the exceptions for it, which was really interesting for me because I never understood it in class.

Then our meeting was over again. As always it was very funny and delicious, so I am looking forward to the next one.
