We met at the university and went to the city center together to check out a few second-hand stores.
First, we went to Kirpputori Bueno (Itsenäisyydenkatu 13). We were very successful there and managed to grab some really cool items. Besides helping each other with advice, we also learned new words related to clothing and shopping.
Some of the words we learned here were:
- Clothing: oblečení
- Pants: kalhoty
- Jeans: džíny
- T-shirt: tričko
- Sweater: svetr (easy to remember because of “sweater”)
- Jacket: bunda
- Shoes: boty (easy to remember because of “boots”)
- Scarf and hat: šála, čepice
- Money, to pay: peníze, platit
- To try on: vyzkoušet si (this one’s really difficult)
- Opinion: názor
In general, I had to come up with little memory tricks for almost all of the words, since most of them don’t resemble any language I already know.
With our bags well-filled, we continued to the next store, this time Uff Vintage Tampere (Hämeenkatu 18). What we particularly liked there was that the whole shop is arranged by colors, giving it a really beautiful and harmonious appearance.
Here, we faced a very special challenge: each of us picked a full outfit for another person. There were no rules or limits, which made the results quite colorful, patterned, and wild. Some might even describe them as “bad taste outfits.” ^^
When we saw each other in the clothes, there was a lot of laughter, and we had a huge amount of fun.
Afterwards, we browsed a bit more and picked up a few more items. We also talked about what people typically wear in our home countries. In Germany, we quickly came to Dirndl and Lederhosen, especially since Christoph and I are both from Bavaria, where it’s almost a must to own one. In the Czech Republic, there is the “kroj”. Each region has its own version, and most kroje are very colorful and decorated with embroidery.
All in all, we had a very fun afternoon, and what brings people together better than laughing and having fun?
