First Project Report by Farhat Samira

When we think of digital communication now, we instantly think of social media, different chatting platforms, mobile phone and internet technology. But the digitalization of communication started as early as in 1800s when electric Telegram was invented.  Then came telephone, radio and television and connected people closer than they could ever imagine. And with the invention of Internet the whole world become accessible by its habitants. From the beginning of 21st century to till date social media, 4G 5G network, mobile technology etc have made communication so easy that now we do not worry at all on how to be connected to our loved ones or even how we can work from anywhere in a world for a company which is far away from us. After the covid outbreak, we have realized besides communication, daily work of different professionals also doesn’t need an office or a workspace. This transformation in communication fascinates me a lot. And also raise questions in me if all these is for the betterment of human race or not.

After starting my master’s journey at Tampere University, my eyes have opened even more. For the project work, I have chosen MuseoX as their vision also resonates with my aim to learn more on human interaction transformation and its effect on induvial and the society in whole. The aim of the MuseoX project is to create a new museum with national responsibility that will record Finnish people’s communications, games, postal activities and digital life as well as display and share experiential content. The museum will encourage people to think about communication between people, how it has changed, and its significance from the perspective of the individual and society (source: https://museox.fi/en/what-is-museox/).

The topic that I have in mind is to work with MuseoX in collecting historical evidences of how humans have evolved their communication in digital era. What mediums and languages and common thoughts have provided the world to come together and graciously accept the new ways all around the world being so different in culture, values and many things else. I personally like to meet with people in person, attend the classes in person and do socializing when I am around human beings. I have never been into virtual world that much. I can’t video call someone for hours, I am still not so comfortable talking to a screen. I am from Bangladesh, a country in south east Asia. Our culture is also big on people meeting other people in person. So, my in my head, the digital transformation is not so positive in terms of individuals and societies. On the other hand, I really understand the importance of this global access, for which I am here in Finland now studying at Tampere University. I applied online, fulfilled all requirements online and the communication with the university till I arrived here was virtual. The world has become a smaller place because for digital communication.

In summary, I have realized this topic of digital communication transformation is important to me so I want to work on it. But I am still open to research more on how my work can be helpful for the company and my course at SDL.
