Get to know our beloved city

Tampere has recently celebrated its 240th anniversary. Here are some interesting facts about this beautiful city and some tips to get to know it better!

  1. Tampere was founded on October 1779 by Gustave III of Sweden. It was a small town that grew later on as an industrial centre. Finlayson, founded in 1820 by Scottish engineer James Finlayson, was one of the biggest industrial districts in the Northern countries. Tip: Visit the Finlayson area, there are countless activities for everyone: go to the movies, enjoy a beer/drink, have a scrumptious meal, take a look at the history of Finland by visiting the Finnish Labour Museum Werstas, and don’t forget to visit also the Finlayson Church and Tallipiha Stable Yards. The possibilities are endless!
  1. Tampere was an important site during the Civil War in Finland. The Battle of Tampere (1918) is known as one of the most atrocious happenings in the history of Finland. Vapriikki Museum has a permanent exhibition called Tampere 1918, which presents different perspectives from the battle. Tip: the entrance to the museum is free on Fridays from 15 to 18.
  1. Tampere is located between two lakes and it is divided into two halves by Tammerkoski rapids. From Pispala area you can enjoy the view from the ridge of both lakes. Tip: If you visit Pispala, besides enjoying the breathtaking views, you can visit Rajaportti sauna, which is the oldest in Tampere. You can also enjoy a delicious meal at Café Pispala or Pispalan Pulteri.
  1. Tampere is known as the Sauna Capital of the World. There are more than 30 public saunas in Tampere and the oldest is Rajaportti (as mentioned above) which was built in 1906 and it is still in use. Tip: check the public saunas near you. Saunas are open all year long. Don’t let the winter stop you, try also “avanto”, which in English is winter swimming. People usually take a dip into the lake after sauna, so give it a try!

Student Hangout on Campus - OASIS

After an intense day of lectures, I tagged along a group of friends to Pinni B at City centre campus. We occupied the back row of bean bags, having a very serious discussion about 'how to react to the question "how are you?" '. Someone started to crochet a scarf for winter, and some decided to play Super Smash Bros. As one got a coffee and continued working on their laptop, we found out professors from the previous lectures were hanging out there as well - they were trying to finish a jigsaw puzzle left on a desk for a few days. And this all happens at OASIS – it’s an open space for all.
