This project aims to transform an isolated site near the Nokia Arena into a vibrant, student-focused hub that reinforces Tampere’s identity as Finland’s second-largest university city. The area, bordered by major roads, presents a unique opportunity to create a “Student Island” that strengthens the connection between academic life and community. Our intention is to enhance the university’s character by fostering a international student community where Finnish and international students can live, learn, and collaborate. The design prioritizes a mix of student housing options, ranging from single units to shared apartments. With a focus on flexibility, the space will accommodate both short-term academic stays and long-term student life, ensuring adaptability to evolving needs. In addition to residential spaces, the site will feature communal areas, sports facilities, co-working spaces, and offices to promote interaction and innovation. Furthermore, the student island will support students’ daily needs with shops and leisure spaces. The project also seeks to integrate the site with its surroundings by connecting it to the Nokia Arena, the City Campus of Tampere University, and the broader Tampere city center, fostering a sense of openness and accessibility to create a sustainable, vibrant student community that enriches both the academic and social fabric of Tampere.
