What makes your house environmentally sustainable?

By Mamata Simkhada

Every people wants their house to be elegant and attractive. Whenever we are building a house, our main focus will be the exterior design and then the interior design. After the house has been built we then try to make it alluring by adding more decorative items. We don’t even realize where does those things come from, are they safe for the environment, how deleterious it can be using a plastic vase for flowers ? But we always entertain the idea of vision. In fact, why we never give a thought to both safe and beautiful house ? Is it feasible ? How sheltered and cosy a green house can be ? Do we genuinely feel homely in it ?

Inspecting some research on building a sustainable house and accumulating the relevent acquaintance with some green house owners, I believe that the eco- friendly house is what we need for us and for the environment. The energy efficient house was build for the first time in the late 1980s. Aspects such as superinsulation, ventilation, solar heating and renewable energy are considered during the design process. But the sad reality according to a survey in Uk is that the youth of the nation or basically the people of age 18-25 are 15% less likely to worry about how much power they are using at home compared to those who are above the age 55. Only few % of people believe that the house we live contribute to our carbon footprint.

Harnessing the power of renewable energy

Sunlight is the main source of unlimited natural light. The sun can provide enough light for everyone during the day so , why not employ this natural light instead of using artificial lights. Some of the ways to maximize the use of sunlight are as follows:

  • Install larger windows and doors
  • Colouring the walls and ceiling with light colours like white/grey
  • Position or hang several mirros.
  • Get shiny furnitures with exposed legs.
  • Install solar pannels or solar tubes.

A rooftop garden…? Intriguingly, plants inside the house?

Many people dream to have a bunglow with a small garden in their compond. Actually, who doesn’t love the idea of having different species of plants and scented flowers that makes the house look even better. So, basically my point of view is that what if we try to make it in the roof, I mean the garden ? Like seriously, this might sound stupid for some but why not ? Have we ever thought about it benefits. I can explain some of the advantages of it and I believe it would be great if we try making our own rooftop garden and find more and more about it. And also the idea of having plants inside the house is not that bad either. The only thing you need to know is just remember to propagate the plants instead of buying a new one everytime.

The first thing we all know about the plantation is basically the improved air quality. We could get good amount of oxygen from those fresh plants within our house. Another benefit would be the effective use of rain water so that the plants could get enough water immediately when it rains. Sometimes the water get stored on the roof which can be used later for the plants whenever needed. Plants in rooftop not only retain rainwater but also help to moderate its temperature, acting as  natural filter for any water that runs off the building. As a matter of fact, the combination of soil and plants can help to absorb, reflect, or deflect sound waves, providing the building with excellent noise reduction, particularly for low-frequency sounds. So, this could be greatly beneficial in decreasing the noise pollution for the people having a house near an airport, industry or in a busy city. Rooftop gardens can also lead to less and more effective use of energy as they provide great insulation, retaining heat in winter and keeping temperatures cool in summer. Moreover, having plants inside our house will eliminate the need of things like air purifier.

Energy efficient appliance

The foremost way of building an environmentally sustainable house is using the energy efficient appliance. Among most effective and popular lightening source, Compact fluorecent lamps (CFLs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are the best one. Having long life expectancy and low voltage operation, LED aids to consume less eneegy and subsequently money. In order to save the energy consumption from electronic gadget we can simply just unplug the items when it’s not in use. Another energy efficient appliance we can use is electric kettles which consume undoubtedly less units. The solar pannels can be the other alternative for this which doesn’t even need any electricity but only the sunight, serving the water for heating. Going everything electric could save unbelieveable amount of energy so why not using microwave oven instead of LPG gas. Microwave have a lot of benefits like quick heating, low energy consumption, safe for children, variable heating settings and most importantly great for sustainability. So, why not switching to the electronic appliances which are energy efficient.

In conclusion, an energy efficient house is the personal step towards the direction of renewable energy, environmental protection and sustainable living. As a first step, planting some trees could be the best decision to start with for better environment around our house. If you want to start saving money, If you want to start saving money, protect your health and the environment, do not hesitate to apply whatever has been taught about sustainability so far. Create a comfortable energy efficient home and join the quickly approaching future of energy sustainability. Most probably, you can use woods or bamboos instead of bricks and cement to built a house of your own. The environmental impacts depends on you and how you handle it so, do great and be great.
