7th meeting: ~Korean fairy tales~

On April 9th I met with Yoon Soo at the Tamko office. It was morning, so there were not so much people and it was a comfortable place to study.

We didn’t plan any theme for the meeting, but somehow I ended up interested in Korean traditional fairy tales. So Yoon Soo searched stories on Internet. The first folk tale was
“혹부리영감”.

We read it together, I translated words and phrases which I knew, and Yoon Soo helped with the rest. The traditional stories are written in formal Korean, which differs from the informal/colloquial (the one I’m studying ). So it was a bit challenging for me to understand everything. The story is about 2 men, good one could sing very well, and other not, and the bad man stole the abitily of singing from a good one.

Next fairy tale was “햇님달님” – “Sun and Moon”. We decided to watch a cartoon.

The story reminded me “Red Riding Hood”. But in Korean one there were grandmother, brother and sister, and a tiger instead of wolf. The story is very interesting, and tiger was so funny for me! “Korean tiger” stole food from grandmother, and that were traditional Korean rice cakes teokk (떡) (p.s. I ate them, so tasty!), children lived in traditional house and were wearing national clothes “hanbok” (한복). I understood some sentences, and Yoon Soo translated for me as well.

The third story was “장화홍련전”. We watched a cartoon again.

It was about a man with two daughters, who married a bad woman. The step mother kicked sisters out of house, and poor daugthers died. The father was very sad, and later when he had another two little daugthers, he named them in honor of the dead sisters. A bit sad story, but very interesting too.

From this meeting I learned also some new words, and get used a little to the formal style of language. At home I will watch more cartoons and will read stories.

Yoon Soo explained me where I can find the videos:

It was very interesting learning process through cultural experience!~
