The one movie you should all ways show to foreign people: Rare exports. It tells how weird and crazy finish people are as they run around in forest to hunt Santa Claus.
We had no time to watch this movie before Christmas, but we did watch it a few days after Chinese New Year, so no harm done. Though Rare exports is a comedy for children, it has multiple depths. It shows how some people live in northern Finland and how life is sometimes a struggle. There are themes that are quite dark. Like the history of finish Santa Claus that was not all fun and laughter. Yet the movie manages to be funny and not scary. I think the movie is very sympathetic as the main characters are father and son living alone and trying to work out their relationship. In the end the young boy becomes a hero and is no longer a child in his father’s eyes.
This movie was served with Karelian pies (Karjalan piirakat) and egg butter. Karelian pies are traditional Finnish food which consist of dough and rise. Egg butter is boiled and smashed eggs are mixed with butter. You can find directions how to make them in youtube.
