finnish sayings/meeting 4

I was wondering if there are some funny Finnish sayings because there are quite a few in Austria/respectively Germany (Knapp daneben ist auch vorbei). So here is what I learned:

– itku pitkästä ilosta (=a cry from long happiness), meaning: if you’re having too much fun, you should slow down a bit in order to continue to have fun

– vettä sataa kuin Esterin perseestä (=it’s raining from Ester’s ass), meaning: heavy raining

– ei ole koiraa karvoihin katsominen (=don’t judge a dog by its fur), meaning: don’t judge someone by outer appearance

– naarma on kuin petolinnun perse (=someone’s face is like a bird of prey’s ass), meaning: someone has a pretty ugly face

– kaksi kärpästä samalla iskulla (=two flies with one slap), meaning: surprisingly get two things instead of one

– oma maa mansikka muu maa mustikka (=own country is strawberries, other countries are blueberries), meaning: home, sweet home

– minkä taakseen jättä, sen edestään löytää (=the things you leave behind you will find ahead), meaning: things you ignore will catch up with you in the future

– kana on munaa viisaamp (= the chicken is wiser than the egg), meaning: older people are wiser than younger ones

– tukka putkella (= hair is like a pipe), meaning: someone walks really fast

– vääntää rautalangasta (=bending steel wire), meaning: explaining things to someone who doesn’t understand easily

– kuin kaksi marjaa (=like two berries) + -kuin paita ja peppu (like a T-shirt and a butt), meaning: two people are like Siamese twins, for example being very good and close friends

– kalsarikännit =drinking home alone/in very small groups without intention of going out, no explanation needed J

It was so much fun getting to know those sayings because they are quite different from German ones. Still thinking about who that Ester person is though….
