[Finnish/French] - House vocabulary

For our second to last meeting we wanted to learn more vocabulary. As I had learnt some I wanted to know more about the different rooms and objects there are in a house.

First, a thing I noticed few days before : there are so many “k” in Finnish words. I told that to Nina and she was surprised becaue she had never noticed that before. Moreover, it was funny because we taught so many words that sometimes we didn’t even remember the names in our own language, because they were words we don’t usually use or objects we don’t have at our place. We used drawings to explain the words because sometimes we didn’t know the translation and we thought it is more funny.

I like learning new finnish words because this language is very logical. For example :

  • almost all the name of the rooms contain the word “room” which is “huone” in finnish : maluuhuone, kylpyhuone, olohuone, työhuone
  • they are basic words like table ->”pöytä”, chair -> “tuoli” or sofa ->”sohva” and to say armchair it is “nojatuoli” or coffee table “sohvapöytä
  • the words describe very well themselves like fridge is “jääkaappi” which literally means “ice cupboard” or computer “tietokone” which means “knowledge machine”

In France we are not logical at all. Besides, it was very difficult, and I think it is for anyone who wants to learn french, to understand the feminine and masculine because there is no rule. For instance a bath (the furniture) is UNE baignoire but the act of taking a bath is “prendre UN bain” ! Even for us sometimes it is difficult !
