National Holiday

Getting closer to the Easter holidays, we thought of learning more about each others’ habits on different holidays.
We talked about:
Easter
in Hungary: The Easter Bunny takes gifts for the kids into the nest that they make out of grass and flowers on Sunday morning. Families usually celebrate Easter by inviting relatives for a lunch with a lot of food and cookies/cakes. They might decorate their home with eggs and easter animals (bunny, sheep, chicken…) and flowers (laburnum) in vases. On Easter Monday morning, we have a traditional event called locsolás [watering] when boys go over to girls place and water them with parfume or water and they get decorated boiled eggs in exchange.
in Finland: The Finnish name of the holiday is pääsiäinen. Finland has a special (at least compared to our country) Easter egg: the normal egg shell is filled with chocolate.

Vappu: Vappu is a Finnish holiday celebrated on 1st of May. It is an official flagday and a work-free day.
There are a lot of events the day before 1st May, where a lot of people go to.
Sima is a traditional holiday drink, which can be made at home – you put sugar, water lemon, yeast and raisins (to show when the drink is ready) in it.

Christmas
in Hungary: In Hungary, we have 2 holidays in December. Kids get presents from Santa Claus on the 6th day, after they cleaned their shoes and put them into the window. Those, who were naughty, they get virgács [special kind of brench] from Krampusz. The other one is Christmas when people decorate Christmas threes on 24th evening and they give presents to each other on the same day. Kids get presents from the baby Jesus. 25th and 26th days families meet their relatives on a lunch or dinner.
in Finland: Finnish people celebrate Christmas on the same day as in Hungary. Joulupukki takes presents for the kids on 24th day evening. He lives in Lapland with his reindeers. Families eat together with their relatives, they eat ham [kinkku] and a lot of rice porridge with almond. – who gets the almond in his/her plate, he/she gets luck or some kind of present.
