In the last time there were a lot of public holidays in finland. At least I could see several finnish flags all around the city. Jasper told me one really nice story about the 5th of February.
It is the day of J.L. Runeberg, a famous finnish writer. When he was in dying condition and only laying in bed some visitors arrived to see him one last time and to say goodbye. Because of the situation his wife had nothing prepared for the guests. So she just mixed everything that she could find in the house and baked small pieces of cake – the “runebergintorttu”. And these cakes were so good that people are still eating it on the 5th of February (his date of birth).
I have no idea if that is true, but i think it is a nice story. Unfortunately I did not try the runebergintorttu so far…but i guess it´s really delicious.
