In our penultimate meeting, we talked about popular sports and the associated vocabulary in our countries. When it comes to sports, our countries are very different. Only Russia and Finland have some things in common, as both countries have many sports that are played on ice or snow. In Germany, for example, skiing is popular, especially in the Alpine region. In Russia, ice skating is very common in winter and there are many decorated ice rinks, especially during the Christmas season. Skiing is also very popular there in certain areas with mountains. In Finland it is very similar. In addition, the Finns are crazy about ice hockey. Elina and Heini told us that there are two big and famous ice hockey teams in Tampere and there is a big rivalry between them in the city. I know a similar rivalry here in Germany from football. This is the most popular sport in Germany and especially in local duels there is a big rivalry. I am also a big football fan and go to the stadium regularly. However, I would also find it interesting to go to an ice hockey game in Finland. Maybe even to the city duel between the two teams from Tampere.
Here are the vocabulary words we picked out:
Russian:
ice-skating – katatsya na kon’kah (кататься на коньках).
ice skates – kon’ki (коньки)
skiing – katatsya na lyzhah (кататься на лыжах)
Finnish:
Ice hockey – jääkiekko
To ski – hiihtää
To ice skate – luistella
Team – joukkue
To win – voittaa
To lose – hävitä
