During this meeting we are more into learning the languages. We brought our Finnish language materials and Julia and Paapi had brought their Chinese language materials too. It was interesting to hear both of them trying to show us some Chinese conversation between them and they are just awesome! The pronunciation was good and we able to catch what they was trying to say too. 🙂 Their conversation was something like this:
Paapi: Nihao! 你好！Hi there!
Julia: Nihao ma? 你好吗？How are you?
Paapi: Wo hen hao, ni ne? 我很好，你呢？I am fine, and you?
Julia: Wo ye hen hao. 我也很好。I am fine too.
Pappi: Ni shenti hao ma? 你身体好吗？Everything good with you body health?
Julia: Wo shenti bu hao, ni ne? 我身体不好，你呢？No really, and you?
Pappi: Wo shenti hen hao! 我身体很好！I am doing good!
Julia: Ni you didi ma? 你有弟弟吗？Do you have a little brother?
Paapi: Wo you didi, ni ne? 我有弟弟，你呢？I have a little brother, and you?
Julia: Wo mei you didi, wo you gege. Ni you ji ge didi? 我没有弟弟，我有哥哥。 你有几个弟弟？I don’t have a younger brother but elder brother. How many younger brother you have?
Paapi: Wo you yi ge didi. Ni you ji ge gege? 我有一个弟弟。你有几个哥哥？I have one younger brother. How many elder brother you have?
Julia. Wo you yi ge gege. Ni gongzuo ma? 我有一个哥哥。你工作吗？I have one elder brother. Do you work?
Paapi: Wo bu gongzuo. Ni ne? 我不工作。你呢？No I don’t work. And you?
Julia: Yiyang. 一样。Same here.
Pappi: Jing tian wo hen mang. 今天我很忙。I am busy today.
Julia: Wo bu tai mang! Zai Jian! 我不太忙！再见！I am not so busy. Bye! See you!
Pappi: Zai jian! 再见！See you!

We had learned some basics of Finnish too, for example:
– Onko sinulla pikkuveljeä = Do you have a little brother?
– Minulla on yksi pikkuveli. Enta sinulla? = I have one little brother, and you?
– Minulla ei ole pikkuveljeä, minulla on isoveli. = I don’t have a little brother, I have a big brother.
I found very hard to pronounce the word “R” in Finnish, and also realized that Julia and Paapi have some difficulties to pronounce the “Y” in Chinese as in Finnish “Y” pronounce as (yy) but in Chinese it’s (wai). It’s quite complicated to explain in word form. But yes the language between different culture always has their own characteristics and always challenging the beginner tongue, I think that’s pretty common in learning a new language, and practice is the Key!
This meeting help to improve my Finnish pronunciation and obviously I had learned more Finnish vocabulary and sentences! After the meeting, I found out more interesting part of learning Finnish and become more keen on that. This kind of culture and language exchange really excite and encourage me to learn more and more about that.
I also found that teaching Chinese is also not an easy job as like what I mentioned just now, the language itself has their own strong features which has a big different with the other one. We have to give lot of examples in explaining and listening and speaking part also the crucial parts too. I will say that listen, write, read and speak the language that you are learning in a daily routine is the final key to improve. It’s not an easy job to keep but we must insist on that!
