Traditional Finnish Music

One member of our group is studying music in TaMK. Her instrument is kantele, which is a traditional finnish instrument. So for this meeting we went to her house and she explained a little something about kantele and the kind of music scene that surrounds it.

I used to play kantele when I was a kid, but this was something different. The kantele I had had five strings and was really easy to play. The actual kantele that’s not for kids is a lot bigger and requires some serious practise to master.

Tilda played  a little for us and told some of the history behind the instrument. Even though I am finnish and I kind of know something about our old traditions, it was great to hear how kantele came to be, and how it has developed throughout the years. It has such a beautiful sound to it!
