This time we met up to watch a film in Spanish but with a touch of Mexico of course, so that we would be able to learn even more from the Mexican culture but also practice our Spanis. Juan Carlos suggested to watch “El libro de la vida” which translates into “The book of life” in english. He suggested this movie because it tells the story of Manelo, Maria and Joaquim in the Mexican town of San Angel. But mostly it tells the story about Dia de Los Muertos, which translates into “Day of the dead”. A big part of the Mexican culture, it is a holiday where everyone celebrates and remembers the dead.
The film showed many more Mexican things and during the film Juan Carlos was able to explain us more and more about them, this was very interesting. Next to that the animation film (which it is), appealed more to me than I expected, since I normally am not such a big fan of animation films.
Furthermore, I was surprised how much I understood from the Spanish, being spoken in the film. We did use English subtitles but I think this even helped me to connect the words I heard to the words I knew. A great way to learn both the language better but also to learn more about the culture of Mexico!
I certainly recommend everyone who likes to practice their Spanish and who wants to learn more about the Mexican culture to watch it!
