For today’s session, Yevhen and I met up again at the TAMKO office. Since we brought some study gear with us, it was the perfect environment to learn stationery vocabulary.
We did a “point-and-name” exercise with whatever we had. I was excited to realize I already knew ручка (pen), but Yevhen helped me expand my list with words like тетрадь (notebook) and ластик (eraser). We had originally planned to practice writing complex sentences using these words, but we spent a lot of time discussing the differences between the Ukrainian and Russian terms for “pencil.” Because we got into a long conversation about the school systems in Ukraine, Poland, and Taiwan. We didn’t get to the sentence-building part of our plan.
Despite the change in plans, it was a productive hour! Comparing the stationery terms to my Polish vocabulary remains the highlight of these meetings—the linguistic links are everywhere.
