In this article i’m writing about our experience of the Christmas market in Tampere, which was a great opportunity to to look into the finnish christmas culture. We talked about Christmas traditions in our home countries and compared how Christmas markets differ in Germany, the Czech Republic, and Finland.
At the market, we tried several traditional foods. One special experience was tasting blood sausage, which is a typical food in Tampere. Although it was unusual for me, it was interesting to try something so closely connected to local culture. We also ate bear sausage with mustard, which was completely new for everyone and tasted actually very good. While walking through the market, we drank warm glögi and hot kakao, which helped create a cozy winter atmosphere.

The market had a very festive atmosphere. We saw Santa Claus, admired the beautiful lights, and visited many small selling stands. During the language exchange, we learned a few Christmas-market-related words from each other’s languages. From Czech, we learned vánoční trh (Christmas market), klobása (sausage), and světla (lights). From German, we used words like Weihnachtsmarkt, Wurst, and Lichterkette. Overall, the experience was very enjoyable, and it helped us connect language learning with real cultural experiences.
