Cottage Madness

A Weekend of Camping, Games and Sauna

Early on Friday, we packed all our things and drove to campsite called Säynäinami next to lake Pappilanselkä. Some people stayed in cottages, but we decided to go for the full camping experience and chose to sleep in a tent. After setting everything up, the weekend truly began.

The first evening was full of music, dancing and playing games. Saturday morning started with breakfast provided by ESN group. We could have whatever we wanted from porridge to fried eggs, different types of bread or some vegetables and fruit.

After gameAfter a balanced breakfast the main event started – the Flunkyball tournament! Where our team surprisingly won! Right after that, we joined the volleyball tournament, where we fought our way to the final match and finished second.

After this sport sessions, we rewarded ourselves with the Finnish tradition – the sauna. We spent hours alternating between the hot wooden sauna and the icy lake. Christoph and I made a small bet about who could stay in the cold lake longer. Unfortunately, I lost, so now I owe him a homemade cake. At least it gives us another good reason to meet again for our next Each One Teach One session.

Talking about Each One Teach One, throughout the weekend, we also kept our learning spirit alive. I taught Christoph and Laura a few new Czech words connected to camping and nature – stan (tent), spacák (sleeping bag), karimatka (camping mat), pivo (beer), jezero (lake), oslava or slavit (party). In return, I learned their German versions. Since I have some basic knowledge in German we spent one evening talking about families and relationships just in German which was really fun. Overall we spent the evening by listening to music and sharing stories.
