International game night

For our latest “Each One Teach One” session, Thijs and I met up with Katja and Etty to share some of our favorite games from home. We all gathered in my room, excited to try something new together.

We started with a German game called Lügen. The aim of the game is simple but tricky: you have to get rid of all your cards by telling clever, hidden lies. The player who gets rid of all their cards first wins. It was especially fun – and a bit challenging – because we didn’t know each other very well yet, so guessing when someone was bluffing became a real adventure. It was a perfect way to break the ice, and we laughed a lot while trying to outsmart each other.

After that, we switched to a French game called Barbu. This one was completely different: the rules change every round, so you have to stay sharp and think strategically. Both Lügen and Barbu use a French deck of cards, which made it easy to move from one game to the next without any hassle.

Finally, we tried a classic Dutch game. Each of us tied two balloons to our feet and had to pop everyone else’s balloons while protecting our own. It turned out to be surprisingly exhausting but absolutely hilarious. In the Netherlands, people usually play this game at birthday parties, and I can totally see why – it’s chaotic, funny, and full of energy.

By the end of the afternoon, we realized that the four of us worked really well together as a group. We had so much fun that we all agreed we definitely want to meet again in this same combination. It was a great way to learn about each other’s cultures, try new games, and just enjoy being together.
