The ninth Each One Teach One session was held on the 8th of December in the supermarket. We had a desire to study useful vocabulary connected with food and shopping in general doing something useful and entertaining.
We passed through the aisles and named various products that we could see: bread, milk, cheese, rice, fruit, and vegetables, among many others. We passed the words in Spanish, English, and Persian, and we assisted one another with the pronunciation. It was an excellent method of relating new words to real things and circumstances.
There were also certain cultural differences in supermarkets that we discussed. As an example, we discussed with Alijon how food is sold and arranged in Tajikistan and she discussed how this is the same in Spain. It was also surprising to observe how even a simple activity like shopping could expose differences in life and culture in our day-to-day lives.
This was a practical and pleasant meeting. It demonstrated to me that I best learn languages with reference to actual experiences. I believed that my language had gotten better to a great extent and I was able to apply it right away in everyday contexts.
