Song exchange

During our latest German-Dutch song exchange, Etty and I once again discovered how music can bridge cultures, evoke memories, and create a feeling of home—whether through a simple “Butterkeks” cookie or the emotional sounds of Dutch and Curaçaoan songs.

Yesterday, Etty and I met for our German-Dutch song exchange. Etty brought snacks with her, including a cookie with an engraved German inscription: “Butterkeks.” This immediately evoked feelings of home in me and reminded me directly of Germany.

First, Etty showed me a very old Dutch song, “’t Laatste Rondje” by André Hazes. The song is rather slow, but full of emotion, and the lyrics are the main focus. Then she introduced me to the song “Meand Fun” by Gezelligheid. The word gezelligheid alone stands for that typical Dutch coziness, and when I heard the lyrics, I was actually able to understand a few words and phrases, such as the word tijd (time).

Since I really wanted to hear something from Curaçao, Etty then showed me the song “Plegaria.” This is a song that always gives her a strong sense of home. She also told me that many people in Curaçao like to listen to Dutch rap. I found the band Broederliefde particularly exciting, a really cool mix of artists with roots in Curaçao, the Netherlands, and Suriname. Finally, Etty showed me her favorite song: “One Night Stand” by B-Brave.

It was another really nice exchange with Etty and it was a lot of fun. I’m already looking forward to our next meeting 🙂
