My experiences of Finland

What comes to my mind if we talk about my home country, Finland?

The first thing that comes to my mind is the nature, the summer nights when the sun is up all night long, but also the darkness of winter when there is no sunlight at all for like 3 months.  If you like great views and like to do stuff outside, Finland is the place for you.

I mean a picture is worth a thousand words so here is a picture I took in Turku, so you can see the darkness for yourself.

Here is a picture I took in Tampere:

The second thing is saunas. Finland has over 3 million saunas and for the population of 5,4 million people that is a lot. Almost everyone in Finland has a sauna in their home. Well, I even know people who have 2 saunas, one in the house, and second at outside. Sometimes they even have a summer cottage with sauna.  If there is something Finnish people love, it is their saunas. Normally you heat up the sauna to about 100 celcius degrees so you can enjoy it. Not like the Swedish sauna where it is like 60 degrees and you freeze to death. That’s also one thing Finnish people love, making fun of Swedes.

In the last winter I went for a swim at a frozen lake (avanto) after sauna for the first time in my life. Before the experience I didn’t really understand why anyone would do that to themselves, but my dad encouraged me to do it and told me that it is awesome. I couldn’t believe that, but I’m the type to try everything at least once so I went and did it.. And it was one of the greatest experiences of my life. Totally worth it, will do it again. You should try it too!
