MoViKo team represents Plural in sunny Bergamo

In June 2025, MoViKo scholars Professor Mikhail Mikhailov and Satu Valkiainen participated in the CERLIS2025 (Centro di Ricerca sui Linguaggi Specialistici) conference held at the University of Bergamo, Italy.

Sponsored by AIA – the Italian Association for the Study of English, the CERLIS2025 conference took place on June 12 – 14 and was devoted to “Metaphors in Specialized Discourses in and across Cultures”.

Bringing together scholars working in the fields of linguistics, media studies, and translation studies, the conference explored the versatile use of metaphors in the contexts of politics, healthcare, education, advertising, and many more.

On the panel ‘Metaphor and Politics,’ pluralist Satu Valkiainen gave a presentation on the topic “The Roads We Take. The Metaphor of a Journey in Lenin’s Works and Their Finnish Translations” that was prepared together with Professor Mikhail Mikhailov.

When asked what the overall impression of the conference was, Valkiainen stated that “The two and a half conference days were packed with presentations with five parallel sections. There were a couple of interesting presentations on translating metaphors, and I found the plenary speakers’ keynotes insightful as well.”

We are delighted that our colleagues had the opportunity to promote their research at an international conference of such a calibre, and we hope they had a chance to make the most of the wonderful summer weather in Bergamo, too.
