First Project Report by Xiangrong Lin

I am interested in the topic of the holistic sustainability of hybrid teaching at Tampere University as my option from the project topic selection.

Firstly, it is more familiar with my study life than other project selection options. I got a bachelor’s degree in Finland, and the study period was from 2018 to 2021. I went through two different teaching approaches, from live lectures to online teaching caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. At the beginning of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic was developing in the world. My previous university closed the live lectures on the 13th of March 2020 and changed to online courses. These experiences are helpful to research this topic.

Secondly, I got benefits from this hybrid teaching approach during my first study period. I was delighted by the hybrid teaching approach when I participated in my courses. This innovative teaching method combines two teaching approaches after the COVID-19 pandemic. Sometimes, students cannot attend live lectures on time due to many issues. Still, they can join the online courses instead of live lectures which is more flexible and convenient to make sure to attend all classes. For example, I was getting cold and coughing some days after I arrived in Finland. I chose to join the online courses because I didn’t want to infect other students. These benefits come from a hybrid teaching approach.

Thirdly, I would like to research how this hybrid teaching works. There are some questions in my mind like the pros and cons of practicing the hybrid teaching approach in Tampere University. Is it sustainable for both students and teachers? Do other universities do the same teaching way after the COVID-19 pandemic? How can we make it more sustainable for students in future teaching works, avoiding losing the sense of community? How do students or teachers feel while they are participating in the hybrid teaching Etc.

In summary, these reasons and questions supported me in choosing the topic and motivated me to research the holistic sustainability of hybrid teaching. Doing more research and getting more data to support our hybrid teaching approach.
