1. Hervantajärvi: Tampere’s Hidden Gem
Hervantajärvi isn’t just about nature—it’s part of our student life! It’s a short tram travel or bike ride from the Hervanta campus, making it a popular spot for spontaneous gatherings. This spot has become my go-to place for a quick getaway. The lake is surrounded by lush forests, perfect for hiking, swimming, or simply sitting by the water and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. Many students enjoy the swimming beach (uimaranta), especially in the summer when the days are long and warm. After a long semester, there’s nothing like sitting by the lake to unwind with friends, enjoying snacks and the serene view.
During the late summer and early autumn, Hervantajärvi becomes a hotspot for mushroom picking and wild berry gathering—a delightful Finnish tradition. Whether it’s a picnic or a casual swim with friends, Hervantajärvi is a great spot to experience Finnish nature close to campus.
2. Pyynikki Vista Point and Jalkasaari Scenic Cliff: A View to Remember
Pyynikki is famous for having the world’s tallest ridge formed by a glacier, and the vista point offers a breathtaking view of the city and its surrounding lakes. The Pyynikki Observation Tower is a must-visit not just for its panoramic views but also for the café inside, which serves what many locals believe to be the best doughnuts in Finland. Just a short walk from the tower, the Jalkasaari Scenic Cliff is a perfect place to watch the sunset or just take a moment to breathe in the fresh air.
3. Epilä: The Ultimate Frisbee Golf Destination
Epilä is a paradise for frisbee golf enthusiasts, boasting 15 different trails set in a beautiful, forested area. Whether you’re a seasoned player or a beginner, you’ll find trails that challenge and entertain. The area’s peaceful ambiance and scenic beauty make it a great spot for a leisurely walk or an active afternoon of frisbee golf. Even in winter, when snow covers the trails, Epilä remains a captivating place to visit, with its quiet, snow-draped forests providing a serene backdrop for outdoor fun.
4. Näsi Park: A Green Oasis in the Heart of the City
Näsi Park, located near the iconic Näsinneula Observation Tower, also not far from the city center campus, is a beautiful urban park that offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The park is known for its manicured gardens, picturesque walking paths, and stunning views of Lake Näsijärvi. Whether you’re looking for a place to relax with a book, have a picnic with friends, or simply enjoy a peaceful stroll, Näsi Park is the perfect spot. The park is especially beautiful in the spring when the flowers are in full bloom, creating a colorful and fragrant landscape.
5. Hatanpää Park Arboretum: A Botanical Wonderland
A short distance from the city center campus, Hatanpää Park Arboretum is a must-visit for anyone with a love for plants and flowers. This expansive park is home to a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and flowers, carefully curated to create a stunning botanical garden. The arboretum is divided into different sections, each with its own unique theme, making it a fascinating place to explore. In the summer, the rose garden is particularly beautiful, with hundreds of roses in bloom, filling the air with their sweet fragrance. The park also offers scenic views of Lake Pyhäjärvi, making it a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts.
