I’ve been a student ambassador at Tampere University since last September, working as part of the Content Crew. My main role is to represent the university to current and prospective students by sharing what student life is like at Tampere University, highlighting campus facilities, and giving insight into living in Tampere. I also occasionally guide visitors around the university. The goal is to provide a genuine student perspective and help future students feel welcomed and well-informed.
What do I do as a Student Ambassador?
One day I might be writing an article about how does it feels like to be a student ambassador, and another day I could be taking over the university’s Instagram to share a day in my life on campus. Sometimes, I also assist visitors to take a tour on campus and introduce them different campus architecture and facilities. I answer questions from applicants mostly in the Unibuddy app, and provide information about courses, campus facilities, city life in Tampere, weather, people and many more. Essentially, being an ambassador means being a representative of the student community. For people who are unfamiliar with the university, we provide an honest voice and a face. In order for potential students to truly experience what it’s like to study here.
What do I gain from this role?
In addition to assisting others, a student ambassador role is a learning opportunity for us ambassadors. From day one, I started developing valuable skills. Creating content and communicating to diverse audiences has made me a better communicator. I’ve learned how to write effectively for a broad audience, how to create engaging social media contents and how to communicate with people effectively. Working in this role has also taught me a lot about teamwork and collaboration. We often work together on projects. Through these team works I’ve learned how to brainstorm ideas in a group and plan projects from start to finish. Undoubtedly, One of the biggest personal benefits is increased confidence. Representing the university and interacting with everyone regularly pushed me step out of my comfort zone. Over time, I’ve become more comfortable starting conversations, answering unexpected questions, and adapting to critical situations. These skills are useful not just in ambassador work but also in academics and future careers. Let’s not forget the simple joy of leaving a positive impact. There’s a great feeling that comes from knowing something you did maybe you helped someone decide to apply to Tampere University or eased their worries about moving to a new country. Contributing to that decision and excitement is incredibly self-satisfying.
Being part of the Ambassador team
One of the best parts of being a student ambassador is the community. The ambassador crew at Tampere University is group of students from different countries and fields of study, Everyone contributed new ideas and collaborated to develop them further. From the beginning, I felt welcomed by the coordinators who lead us. We had training sessions and monthly meet-ups (sometimes with snacks and coffee involved) where we exchange our ideas and tips what kind of content we are planning to make and so on. It’s comforting to know that if I face a challenge like a complicated question from a prospective student I can easily reach out to the coordinators for advice, and they will happily help. Being part of the team also means you never work alone; even if I’m writing an article by myself, I might ask a fellow ambassador to proofread it or share their viewpoint. In return, I do the same for them. Through these interactions, I’ve made wonderful friends and expanded my network. We learn from each other’s cultures and academic backgrounds, making the ambassador group a mini-international student community at the university.

A rewarding journey
Lastly, I want to admit that being a student ambassador is a rewarding journey of growth and networking. It’s about proudly representing your university and offering advice to those who are stepping into your shoes next. The role involves dedication and creativity, but in return it gives personal development and meaningful experiences. The student ambassador program is an excellent chance for any student who likes getting involved in the university community and assisting others. It allows one to develop skills while actually influencing someone’s decision-making process. I’m grateful to be part of Tampere University’s ambassador team. I’m excited to continue encouraging new students to join our community.
