PULSE
The foundation, steady and unchangeable rhythm. Constant movement and flow through rock-steady spaces.
Pulse is a social meeting spot and musical multi-purpose center located in Kaupinoja. It allows people to meet each other and experience music in various ways and spaces. This center transforms the identity of the area to a place where one can experience culture and art through music while still maintaining the outdoor activity aspects. The form is inspired by a windchime.
CONNECTION TO NATURE
The music center takes its place in the bedrock and is in harmony with nature. Through windows and shafts it lets in soft natural light. The views to the lake are utilised to allow the user to feel close to the lake and its landscape. Located closest to the lake is a nature hall, which has wide openings towards the lake and it can be opened to let the natural soundscape in. In the center of the building there is a courtyard, which can be occasionally used as a performance area.
Spaces in the building are arranged in a naturally flowing manner, starting the users’ journey from the main entrance and descending through different spaces. The center accommodates different user groups with varying needs. These spaces can function on their own as separate sections. Different user groups are visitors, passer-bys, staff, performers and students.
WALKABLE ROOF
One key part of the building is an accessible rooftop pathway, which allows all passer-bys and visitors to take a pleasant route across the building. This allows even non-humans to cross the site. The route enriches architectural and social experience. The pathway is suitable for all kinds of outdoor activities common in the area; you can ski across it and grab a cup of coffee along the way.
The flat roofing is utilized as low-maintained green roofs with meadow vegetation. This is beneficial for the local wildlife and makes the building blend with the terrain.
