A SAFE SPACE FOR SELF-EXPRESSION
The Shelter is a music experience centre located in Kaupinpuistonkatu 2, close to Näsijärvi in Tampere. The surrounding area is vast and has an important environmental value, thanks to the adjacent forest and lake. Since, in nature, shapes are most of the time organic, the project violently inserts itself in the area and tries to give order to the natural motion.
The bridge that connects the parking lot to the building allows the visitor to leave the rest of the world behind and works as the beginning of the experience. It is inserted directly into the ground floor and, thanks to a ramp that leads to the basement, it continues from the opposite side of the cube, directing people towards the lake.
What appears as a rigid and closed volume from the outside reveals a lively and thriving interior: different functions intertwine, and the openings on the roof work as big skylights, allowing natural light to flow into the building.
The inside of the volume is complex, as many different rooms of different heights are all embedded within each other. The building is also characterised by a central spine where all the serving spaces are located. Running alongside it, the ramp allows visitors to traverse all the different levels, experiencing the building in all its spaces and nuances.
