Grants & school

Oh my, it is not easy to balance school, work, and grants.

I’m a huge fan of the study grant. Go Finland! It is amazing that we have a system that helps students financially throw their education path. More education, more tax money in the future. It’s a win-win! I have to admit that I’m not a fan of the housing benefits system. But, because that system is paying almost 80% of my living costs, I’ll just say that it’s okay too.

In the past month, I’ve taken part in various new student & money conversations. Some of the new TAMK students haven’t realized to count their incomes and make sure that they are allowed for the study grant. Some haven’t had the energy to inform Kela about their life changes. Some haven’t realized that you can get a student card and it’s benefits for free. There is so much information for the new students that it’s easy to get overwhelmed.

As a student, you usually have to rely on some grants or benefits. There is no doubt that when it comes to money, Kela is the students’ best ally. Often at least.

Here is a teampreneurs quick tip/info list regarding personal money things:

  • Check your incomes before starting school. Maybe instead of earning, have a long summer holiday and enjoy your study grant. If you earn too much, you don’t get the grant.
  • Don’t be afraid to contact Kela. They always try to help. Even though you’d be asking for money.
  • You can’t get a start-up grant for your business if you are getting a study grant.
  • Most of the grants affect each other. This includes e.g. artist grants.
  • Try to plan your first month’s budget beforehand. It is hard, but at least count the final maximum that you spend.

If you come up with other money tips etc. for new teampreneurs, please share in the comments. This is definitely not a completed list, just my thoughts and realizations.

System and especially Kela is here to help us. We just need to know what we can ask from it.
