At a birthday party with costume attire, we were trying to get our now 18 years old friend to get drunk. My Finnish friends told me that it’s basic Finnish culture to get drunk or drink at events, as much as Russians. Apparently, compared to french and Italian, Finns tend to drink stronger booze. In addition to that, we have shared stories regarding interactions with drunks in Finland and I compared that with drunks in my country (Lebanon).
We also talked about Kekri, which is some sort of harvesting event/feast from the autumn which is where everyone also drank booze and is in the day of the dead. I was told that it might also be as important as christmas.
Some Finnish words that they mentioned were:
Asu (costume) – Naamiaiset (masquerade) – velho (wizard) – noita (witch) – kekri (event)
We were given a good fried rice, egg, salad meal that is an Asian meal made by an Egyptian person, so it was interesting to see her take on it.
Everyone ended up drinking as per Finnish tradition, but we failed to make our friend drunk. I guess he has good tolerance to alcohol, and I think it’s a good quality to have in Finland.
