1. Meeting-Introduction

Food & History

The very first meeting was all about introducing ourselves to each other. We talked about food and common dishes from our homes, but also about our background with food. I made the start and talked a bit about my relation to food and then it was Hanna’s turn. As Hanna is from a small village (Dorf) north of Berlin, her cultural background differs from mine more then one would think. In Germany we mix parts of our culture with the ones of the neighbouring countries.

Nisa’s introduction was the most insightful. She talked a lot about the history of Sint Maarten and food culture. Classic dishes from Sint Maarten are things like conch (a kind of soup) and the johnny cakes which are filled bread buns. Johnny cakes used to be called journey cakes because in the 18th century, travellers to Europe used the baked bread to preserve the food used as a filling. All in all, it was a flavourful journey that left us with a deeper appreciation for the diverse tapestry of cultures and cuisines that each of us brought to the table.
