What I learned:
We visited East Asia Mart and Golden Crop Asian Supermarket in Tampere together. My partner was curious about various Korean ingredients and snacks sold there. He learned how to read some Korean words on the product labels such as 라면 (ramen), 김치 (kimchi), and 간장 (soy sauce).
I also learned some Finnish grocery words like riisi (rice), kastike (sauce), and mausteet (spices), which will be useful for my daily shopping.
What I taught:
I taught him basic Korean words for ingredients such as 고추장 (gochujang) and 마늘 (garlic), and explained that these are essential in Korean cooking.
At East Asia Mart, I showed him different types of Korean noodles and sauces, while at Golden Crop, we explored frozen snacks and desserts.
I also recommended popular Korean snacks — 새우깡 (Shrimp Crackers) and 메로나 (Melona ice cream) — telling him they’re childhood favorites for many Koreans.
Reflection:
It was really fun to see familiar Korean products in Finland and explain them in both Korean and English. My partner said he wanted to try Korean snacks next time, and it made me happy to share a small piece of home through food.
