Meeting 6: Ice Hockey Game Ilves

GO Ilves!

Go Ilves!

During the Game we samehow got into the topic of stereotypes. If I recall correctly it was because the Finns were not as invested in the Game as we expected, but it somehow aligned perfectly with what we have experienced the Finns to be in our day to day interactions with them.

Down below are listed some funny stereotypes of Germans and Dutch culture:

Dutch:

Stereotypes:

  • They don’t wear clogs, but some farmers do wear them
  • Dutch people are very direct. They will say what is on our mind
  • A lot of foreign people think every Dutch person lives in Amsterdam. Of course that is not true.
  • ‘’Dutch people smoke a lot of weed’’
  • A lot of foreign people refer to The Netherlands as Holland. But if you say Holland you only refer to two provinces of the twelve we have. They are called: Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland.

German:

we are very punctual – this can easily be refute with the „Deutsche Bahn“ which is the Germany public train system. About 80% of all trains are delayed in Germany.

German’s cannot party: this one is true, as in a study 62% of all participants have said, that they are going out less then once a month. 12% never go out. Only 2% said that they are going out more than 4 times a month

Germans wear sandals with socks. This stereotype is 100% correct I cannot say anything more about it😂
