Sushi Restaurant

My language exchange partners, Laura, Lenka, and I went to an all you can eat Japanese sushi restaurant together. We wanted to practice German and Czech in a real situation while enjoying good food. We tried different dishes: sushi, beef curry, chicken curry, and spring rolls. Everything looked colorful and delicious, and we were excited to try a restaurant in Finland.

During the meal, we talked about our favorite foods and learned some new words in both languages. For example, I learned that “Essstäbchen” means “hůlky” (chopsticks) in Czech. Another useful word was “Reis”, which in Czech is “rýže” (rice). In return, my Czech partner learned some German words like “Soße” (sauce) and “Rechnung” (bill). We practiced short sentences together, such as “Ich mag gern Sushi” (“I like sushi”) and “Mám rád sushi.

We also discussed the differences in eating habits between Germany and the Czech Republic. My Czech friend explained that sushi has become very popular in the Czech Republic, especially in bigger cities, and that people often go out for sushi just like in Germany. I told her that in Germany, many people enjoy trying international food, and sushi is seen as a light and healthy option.

The food was amazing — the amount of different types of sushi was crazy and the beef curry was slightly spicy. The crispy spring rolls were our favorite appetizer. We finished the meal with some chocolate for dessert.

Through this activity, I not only learned new words but also experienced cultural exchange in a fun and natural way. I really enjoyed going together for a meal, as i never were in Finland to a restaurant.
