little bit about SA

Greetings from the pleased country called South Africa

I’m here doing my nursing studet practicals. I work here in different hospitals an clinics. I’ve been in two different public hospitals and one clinic. Wards in hospitals were been surgigal women wards, maternity ward, ortopedic ward and casualties. In the clinic i was in nurse’s reception. I’m here with my good friend Roosa and we have worked together. We also have some school days here at local university. School days were simlab lessions, where we studied and practice nursing with other nursing students.

Before we came to our town Potchefstroom, we were one week at Cape Town. We had very nice experiences there. We were at safari, jumped skydive jump and saw many local places like Cape point, Table mountain and Cape of Good.
Here in our freetime we like to eat at different restaurants and do sport in local gym. That gym is very huge place with swimming pool and the best group exercise classes.
We have met local people and got good tips what to do here in South Africa. We rented car and were at roadtrip. One place on roadtrip was Sun city. That place was just like in dream. It was like whole own world with waterpark, hotels and nice lake with many different water sports.

Working here in public hospitals is sometimes very rough. Public hospitals are very poor and them doesn’t have pillows or blankets to patients. Sometimes there is even a shortage of medicines. Here if go to the local hospital to give birth, you won’t even get an epidural. Sometimes wards doesn’t have gloves, masks or hand desinfection so gladly we have our own ones with us. Asepsis is very bad here compared to Finland. The documents are also on paper files. Wards doesn’t use any computers. Every patient has their own file, where nurse write every day’s vitals and reports. Nurses are called sisters here. Sisters are very friendly and lovely to us but sometimes they speaks so straight to patients so sounds really harsh and unprofessional to finnish ears. Patients respect everything here so much and never complain about anything. That is nice thing.

There is much flaws and sometimes very rudimentary, but people here are so so so openful and always take care of you. That’s why I think that I love this place so much. Everything doesn’t always have to be so luxurious, if there are caring people around.

LOVE AFRICA <3
