Saluti da Firenze!

My study exchange is coming to an end here in Florence, Italy. This experience has taught me a lot and helped me develop both as a person and as a musician. I’m leaving Italy with great memories and new important friendships.

During my time here I have been studying at The Fiesole School of Music. The school is very focused on string quartets and ensemble playing which I have loved, as a violinist. Every string player has their own set quartet with which they study determinedly and perform concerts. This differs from my school in Finland, so I have enjoyed it a lot. I’ve also been very grateful for having had the opportunity to play in two different ensembles besides the orchestra. These kinds of studies have made me work with many new musicians allowing my knowledge of making music together and even my own musicality to grow in new ways and perspectives.

My studies here have only been practical in a sense that I have not studied any theory materials. Because of this I think I’ve had time to develop myself as a musician as well as my musical ideas. Really being able to concentrate full time just on the music has been inspiring. Overall, studying in Italy is very different from what I am used to in Finland. In Italy everything is handled last minute and you kind of live inside a little bubble of chaos where no one really knows what’s going to happen. However, this has opened my eyes about different lifestyles and methods that have taught me to adapt to them.

In my free time I have enjoyed the city of Florence and the amazing food that comes with it. I have been to different markets and admired Florence’s beauty during Christmas time. I’ve also visited many theaters and enjoyed beautiful concerts of classical music. I have made new friends with whom I have experienced the lovely atmosphere of the city of Florence, which is something I will never forget.
