Greetings from vivid Porto!

Beautiful Porto

Greetings from Porto, Portugal! My exchange journey has been a rich tapestry of academic and cultural experiences. Here's a glimpse into my life here, covering my studies, leisure activities, and a comparison of educational cultures between Portugal and Finland.

During my exchange period in Porto, I participated in an exciting project called the European Project Semester (EPS). This initiative brought together Erasmus students from various disciplines and backgrounds. We were divided into five groups of six people, each assigned a unique subject. My group focused on Digital Arts. Our idea was to create a platform where local artists could upload their digital art, which would then be rated by the public. The most popular pieces were showcased throughout Porto using projectors. The project was called ArtSy(nc). This project was incredibly educational, providing us with practical experience and the opportunity to collaborate with students from all over the world. Working in such a diverse team enhanced my communication and teamwork skills, making this a highlight of my academic journey. I miss the people already.

In my spare time, I made the most of my stay by traveling extensively around Portugal. The country’s stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage offered endless exploration opportunities. Football also played a significant role in my leisure activities. I attended eight FC Porto games and a total of fourteen matches overall. A standout moment was watching Cristiano Ronaldo play for the Portuguese national team, where he scored two goals, creating an unforgettable experience. I also fell in love with surfing. Portugal was full of beautiful beaches where to surf. In the end the best part of this experience is all the people who I have met. This will be something I will never forget.

Comparing my studies in Porto to those in Finland, I noticed several key differences. In Finland, the teaching is more structured and organized, providing a clear framework for students. In contrast, my study days in Portugal were quite long, with most of the work being done on campus rather than at home. This immersive approach allowed for greater interaction and hands-on learning, which was particularly beneficial during the EPS project. However, it also demanded more in terms of time management and adaptability.

Despite these differences, the EPS project offered a unique and enriching experience that deviated from the usual curriculum. The chance to engage in a real-world project with international peers was invaluable, fostering a global perspective and practical skills that will undoubtedly benefit my future career.

I will forever miss Porto, best time of my life.
