Postcard from Bangkok: Studying and Living at Chulalongkorn University

During my five-month exchange in Bangkok, Thailand, I studied International Business at Chulalongkorn University and experienced a completely different academic culture. Classes were more formal than in Finland, students stood up when professors entered, and respect for hierarchy was strongly emphasised. It took some time to adjust, but I learned to appreciate the calm and respectful atmosphere, which contrasted with the open, direct style I was used to at home. Outside the classroom, Bangkok was full of life and color. My days were filled with new tastes like pad thai from street vendors, busy rides on motorbike taxis, and peaceful moments visiting temples such as Wat Pho. I spent my free time exploring local markets, sharing meals with new friends. Compared to Finland’s straightforward and structured way of working and studying, Thailand taught me patience, flexibility, and the importance of harmony. Overall, my exchange helped me grow both personally and professionally, and it opened my eyes to how much we can learn when we truly immerse ourselves in another culture.
