I’m Anki, a third-year paramedic student, and at the moment I’m doing my exchange in Australia. For the first 5 weeks, I was at Western Sydney University doing classes and practical lessons. Now I’m doing my placement in Haberfield Superstation, and I love to be here. This place is near Sydney, so it is pretty busy here.
At school, I get to know people from all classes. I took part in first-year student classes as well as third-year students’ classes. People welcomed me warmly, and it was such a pleasure to be with them. It was nice to get familiar with all the equipment and stuff before going to placement. At first, it was pretty hard to use English and especially medical terms were hard for me. By that time, it gets easier, and I’m already much more confident than I was when I came.
I’m here with my three good friends, so it’s been so great to do different things and get to see places during our day off. We have traveled a lot, and it’s so nice to be there with my good friends. I’m not as homesick as I would be there alone. We have visited different cities, we’ve been to the beach, I have seen my relatives who are living there and also we have just enjoyed the warm weather and sunny days.
The placement has also treated me well. I have learned so much already, and it is so nice to see how the paramedicine works here. Everyone here is just so friendly and nice. I have been mostly in the intensive care ambulances, so I have seen a lot of things. In two weeks I have had more “big jobs” than in Finland’s placements. because in Sydney there is the same amount of people as we have in Finland, there is happening more.
Although I love to be there, I’m already a little bit homesick. I also appreciate Finnish healthcare and how we do things. It is great here, but I just like some styles that we have in Finland.
