My internship here has been me working in a university research lab culturing cells and extracting DNA from swapped samples of biofouling that had gather to some test plates in the ocean. Both projects have been super interesting and my skills as a biomedical scientist have expanded as well as evolved during my time here. Working in a research lab has been a very different experience from clinical work. We are working on a lot of new projects that constantly need protocol optimisations and creative thinking to solve problems on the way. Everything is pipetted and done by hand and no automatisation on sight. Where as clinical lab work has clear protocols tested and created based on already existing research and where automatisation is a saviour when it comes to the hundreds of samples everyday,
Enough of work, time off has begun. Most of my friends live in a different city where my exchange collage is located. It’s a 15 minute train ride to them, so I go visit quite often. If I’m not home in Ostend I am hanging out with people in Bruges. If I’m not in Bruges, I’m most likely taking the train home or during a weekend visiting another city, just to explore and spend my day there. I’ve really enjoyed my time in Ghent’s urban student atmosphere and staying in the botanical garden until it was time time to leave for my train. But most fond memories have been created in Bruges, where I’ve gotten to see the beautiful historical red brick houses and eaten the best ice cream on the whole wide world. And at night when I return home I get to see the sun set behind the ocean waves.
So in short, I’m having a good time ๐
