I was in Crete, the capital town, in Heraklion for two months. I was doing my practical training in the Hospital of Pagni. At the first month I was at the perioperative ward and the second month at the surgical ward. Both were very interesting and insightful experiences. The work was easy going and people were friendly and understanding. There were lot of local students, so I got to know more people of my age. The nurses were kind, and I felt very welcomed.
Some of the workers and patients spoke only creek, so understanding them was hard. But usually the other students helped me to understand the patient. I also learned the basics of creek and it was nice to communicate even a little bit. The way of working was old fashioned. I am used to working with computers in Finland, but in Greece everything worked via papers. Also, the hospital building was old and impractical. So those issues made the work a little bit difficult. But otherwise everything went very well there.
In my free time, I visited different places. I went to Chania, Hersonissos and Rethymnon. One of my favorite places was Agios Nikolas and the island of Spinalonga. I saw lots of sights, museums and beautiful places. Also my home town, Heraklion, was a beautiful place. The traditional food was amazing and I ate a lot of greek salad. The weather was good the whole time, so I spent a lot of time outside. There were beautiful places to just walk around and enjoy the city. I also made new friends and we spent some lovely time together.
