Greetings From Gent!

Riverside walk

Hallo! My stay in Gent Belgium is coming to an end and at the same time its marking the end of this semester of studies. Having spend a lot of time at the Hogent Fashion and Textile campus as well as spending time with new friends has given me a lot that I'll cherish for life.

I’ve been studying Fashion and Textile Technology at Hogent for this semester. The studying has included a lot of practical lessons sewing and knitting on industrial machinery as well as attending interesting lectures and company visits. I’ve had the opportunity to do and see things like the Momu museum in Antwerp, knitted apparel factory and a standardized testing facilities for textiles.

My school in TAMK is mostly theory based and an engineering degree. The practical learning I do is lab testing. Here at Hogent I’ve had the possibility to draw patterns, sew products, analyze structures, knit with manual machines as well as industrial grade ones. It has been interesting to get to see this side of textiles. The concentration to fashion and worn textiles is something I couldn’t have gotten from TAMK in this complexity.

One of my practical assignments was pocket mock up pattern drawing and assembly

In my free time I’ve explored Gent via bike. The city is made for biking and it has been the handiest way of getting from place to place while enjoying the scenic routes throughout the city. We had a blast hanging out at cafes and bars and dancing the night away in student nights. I have tried a number of new beers like cherry and rose beer. Coming from Finland where my choice of beer is the cheapest lager this has taught me that that beers can also taste like home made blackcurrant juice. And all good nights in Belgium end at the frituur, a fry shop. I already knew that fries are a Belgian food but it did quite shock me how many frituurs there are and how prevalent they are in the culture. They are everywhere and for sure everyone’s number 1 choice for a quick meal.
